Released on May 21 2001 this is the 13th coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program and the third released in 2001. Rhode Island admitted into the Union on May 29 1790 themed the coin Ocean State. The coin features an image of a vintage sailboat gliding through Rhode Islands famous Narragansett Bay and an image of the Pell Bridge in the background. Launched in 1999 the United States Mint s 50 State Quarters Program was a 10-year initiative that honored each of the nation s states in the order that they ratified the Constitution or were admitted into the Union. Each quarter was produced for about 10 weeks and will never be produced again. State designs are displayed on the reverse (tails) of the quarters while the obverse design displays the familiar image of George Washington. But to accommodate state designs on the reverse the words United States of America Quarter Dollar Liberty and In God We Trust all appear on the obverse. Rhode Island a U.S. state in England is known for sandy shores and seaside Colonial towns. Its home to several large cities including Newport which is famed for sailing and Gilded Age mansions such as The Breakers. Providence its capital is home to Brown University green Roger Williams Park landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk with the famed WaterFire art installation.
